Sometimes opportunity knocks. However, following your passion or building your career can mean physically relocating far from home.
Making the decision to move to a new city – or to a new country for that matter – is a ballsy one! It’s one thing to be in a new place for a week or two, that’s all about being a tourist and returning to your familiar abode, but this is different. Exciting? Definitely, yes! It’s a new adventure, and in many ways, a new you! But let’s get real… for most of us, change is not easy.
Deciding to relocate is a very personal decision and it’s different for everyone. Whatever your reasons to make a move, you’ll experience a rollercoaster of emotions. The “OMG am I making a mistake?” and the “I can’t do this” feelings are bound to come up in the midst of all these life- altering decisions. Also, maybe the little voice inside you will make you feel that being the new kid on the block will be way too hard!
True, there are people that live their entire lives in one city, doing the same job, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But it can’t hurt to try something new. Think about it, the worst thing that can happen is that you don’t like it and move back. At least you’ll be able to replace “What if” with “I’ve tried and now know what’s best for my future.” You’d hate to miss out on opportunities because you dragged your feet, right? As the saying goes: “Ships are safest in the harbour, but that’s not what ships are for.”
Be patient with yourself. Remember, it takes roughly one full year of experiencing all four seasons in a new city to truly feel at home.
Enjoy the ride!
